Google has released Google SketchUp, a 3D modeling program that it acquired last month with the purchase of @Last Software. The tool lets users design and build three-dimensional models of a dream home, a car, a skyscraper -- and just about anything else that might come to mind. Google SketchUp is a free application that targets hobbyists. Based on early reports, the SketchUp system is easy for newcomers to model designing to learn.

Phishers Latch Onto VoIP Systems

Phishers are targeting potential victims through yet another channel: voice over IP systems. Cloudmark, a provider of messaging security applications, this week discovered two separate e-mail schemes that direct recipients to VoIP systems in an effort to steal their personal data. The scam works like this, according to Adam J. O'Donnell, senior research scientist at Cloudmark: "The target receives an e-mail, ostensibly from their bank, telling them there is an issue with their account and to dial a number to resolve the problem."

NASA Postpones Changes to Shuttle Tank

Despite concerns raised by some engineers, NASA said Friday that it plans to put off any further design changes to the shuttle's external fuel tank until after Discovery's flight in July. The space agency had been considering changing the design of the tank's so-called ice frost ramps to stop insulating foam from falling off. The ice frost ramps are wedge-shaped brackets that hold in place the tank's pressurization lines.

New P2P Software Could Lead to ISP Abuse

Computer scientists at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have developed software designed to enable people to share their high-speed wireless connections without sacrificing security or privacy. Researchers believe the software can improve Internet connectivity in residential areas at no additional cost. A typical residential user accesses his broadband home connection about 12 to 15 hours per week, Luo figured. So, while the Internet connection is always on, most of the time it sits idle.

Chip giant Intel this week signaled a cost-cutting reorganization amid slower sales of its microprocessors and related silicon and software products. Chief Executive Paul Otellini reported the company would seek to save as much as US$1 billion this year. The leading chip company in the world, Intel does not typically make moves to pare down its operations, and has even added workers and invested in development during slumps in the overall tech economy.

Music Industry, Movie Studios Warn Colleges on Piracy

The associations representing movie studios and music labels are warning some 40 college presidents that their students are using their high-powered networks to steal copyrighted entertainment and urging them to take "immediate action." The Recording Industry Association of America and the Motion Picture Association of America said they had sent letters to 40 university presidents in 25 states. The letters inform them that their local area networks, or LANs, are being used to download material without authorization from copyright holders.

Nintendo has revealed that it will call its next-generation gaming console simply "Wii." The system will go head to head with Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Sony's upcoming PlayStation 3. Nintendo revealed the new identity of the much-anticipated video game console, previously code-named Revolution, on Thursday. Wii, pronounced "we," intends to break down the wall that separates video game players from everybody else.

Microsoft Misses Targets, Lowers Forecast

Microsoft said strong demand for new products, including the Xbox 360 gaming console, drove a 13 percent jump in revenue for its third quarter, but its earnings and outlook fell short of Wall Street expectations and the company's stock took a pounding as a result. Income for the quarter was US$2.98 billion, up 16 percent, but fell short of analyst targets on a per-share basis, at 31 cents versus the consensus of 33 cents. Revenue came in at $10.9 billion, a 13 percent increase over sales of $9.62 billion a year earlier.

Biologist Awarded $500,000 Prize

A biologist whose pioneering research in genetics led to the exploration of diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's has been awarded the nation's richest prize in medicine and biomedical research. Among medical awards, the $500,000 Albany Medical Center Prize is second only to the $1.4 million Nobel Prize in cash value. The award was to be presented Friday.
