Rhode Island Plans Statewide WiFi Network

The tiny state of Rhode Island is taking a lead in the rush to provide affordable wireless Internet access. While big cities, including Boston, are planning citywide wireless networks, the Ocean State is looking to be the first to roll out statewide broadband access as it attempts to court businesses from neighboring states, including Massachusetts. "We want to be the first state in the country to have border-to-border broadband wireless," said Saul Kaplan, acting executive director of Rhode Island Economic Development Corp.

New P2P Software Could Lead to ISP Abuse

Computer scientists at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have developed software designed to enable people to share their high-speed wireless connections without sacrificing security or privacy. Researchers believe the software can improve Internet connectivity in residential areas at no additional cost. A typical residential user accesses his broadband home connection about 12 to 15 hours per week, Luo figured. So, while the Internet connection is always on, most of the time it sits idle.

Vonage Dials Up The Cloud in WiFi Deal

Internet telephone company Vonage on Wednesday struck a deal with European WiFi network operator The Cloud. The partnership gives Vonage customers access to its VoIP service over The Cloud's UK wireless broadband network. Vonage customers equipped with its WiFi handset will be able to make VoIP calls from The Cloud's WiFi hotspots as part of the standard Vonage subscription -- there will be no additional charges.

UWB Standards Breakdown Impedes Product Progress

An inability to reach a compromise in forging an industry standard has delayed delivery of Ultra Wide Band products and may make it possible for alternative technologies to usurp its role in supporting Personal Area Networks. A rift between the different factions had been ongoing for a few years and eventually led some vendors to abandon their efforts to craft an IEEE standard.
