Nokia Agrees to Pay $253 Million to End Dispute

Nokia, the world's biggest maker of mobile phones, agreed to pay US$253 million to InterDigital Communications to end a dispute over phone technology. The payment will cover phones sold through Wednesday, and the two sides agreed to work toward a licensing agreement for other phones, InterDigital, which is based in King of Prussia, Penn., said in a statement.

Microsoft on the Defensive in EU Case

Microsoft complained Wednesday that the European Commission had forced it to hand over trade secrets to rivals, effectively giving them a "free ride" on the work the software maker did to acquire new customers and develop new technologies. Microsoft's rivals said the company was trying to turn the case into a debate over intellectual property rights and skirt the commission's argument that Microsoft has abused its monopoly.
